Image Mastering, what is it and why is it important?

Image mastering is the art and science of transforming a good camera image as it comes off the camera into an image that meets all technical requirements AND communicates your message in a visually positive way.

This contrasts a "photoshop rescue mission" on a substandard image.

We deliver high quality images which look impressive whether used in magazines, reports, brochures, trade displays, on web pages, power point presentations or in-house word documents.

We have developed our own 38 stage Image Mastering processes that every image must go through before we are happy to let you use it.

Our process starts by using professional equipment and capturing the most image information possible using the camera RAW image format. This format contains 2 to 3 times more information that can be carried in a standart JPG or TIF file.

Selected RAW images are first given overall colour and exposure adjustments before being given the final retouches in Photoshop, which include:

  • Skin tone smoothing, cleaning, colour balancing (eg: peoples noses are commonly redder than the rest of their face, especially in summer)
  • Retouching of unwanted elements in photo: (eg lint, lose threads)
  • Sharpening, noise reduction, blurring as needed
  • Visually checking each image to the individual pixel level and retouching as necessary.

There are no shortcuts to achieving a good end result (believe us, we have tried) as making the correct decisions about what parts of an image to tune colour, sharpen, blur or remove has to be done manually and is necessarily expert time and labour intensive.

Beyond first base

While we are meticulous about the technical aspects of getting our images right - this is just first base.

The rest of the art of portraiture is based on more subtle aspects which will help show:

  • Your personality and ability to build rapport with people
  • Your desire to be seen as friendly, clear and positive
  • Your ability to understand the subtle nuance of a brief and deliver the right feel and implicit message in an image.
  • For example, an image of a CEO or a model wearing corporate attire could be nearly identical, but one must instantly convey "glad they are in charge" vs the other "where do I buy that outfit!"
